Mondelez International has committed to secure 100% of its cocoa volume for all its chocolate brands through the Cocoa Life sustainability programme by 2025.
Cocoa Life sustainability programme was launched in 2012, with an objective to create a successful supply chain by increasing yields on existing farms, build cocoa-growing communities’ resilience and prevent deforestation.
Mondelez International chairman and CEO Dirk Van de Put said: “Our purpose at Mondelēz International is to empower people to snack right and that journey begins with the ingredients we source, including cocoa.
“As demand for chocolate continues to grow, we are leading the transformation to build a thriving cocoa sector, an ingredient essential to our growth.
“The expansion of Cocoa Life moves Mondelēz International a step closer to improving the positive impact the company has on people and the planet.”
“This is an important milestone for our Cocoa Life program and will ensure more consumers around the world can be confident that the chocolate brands they love are made the right way.”
Currently, Mondelēz International sources 43% of its cocoa needs for its chocolate brands through Cocoa Life. The company intends to include Toblerone and Lacta Milka, Côte d’Or and Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate brands in the programme by 2025.
This will increase the number of farmers and communities that Mondelēz International supports across six cocoa origin countries, including Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, India and Brazil.
Mondelēz International also released Cocoa Life’s 2018 Annual Report, which showed positive results from the first six years of the programme.
based on the results, the programme will further refine its focus on key areas of intervention wher the biggest impact can be made.
