Following an investigation of contaminated pet treats, Pet Supplies Plus advises its customers of a recall.

Pet Supplies Plus is recalling bulk pig ear product supplied to all locations by several different vendors. This is due to the potential of Salmonella contamination.

The recall follows recent announcements of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigating contaminated Pig Ear Treats connecting to Salmonella.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, but there is also risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products.

To date, 45 individuals in 13 states have been diagnosed with Salmonella related illness. However, according to Pet Supplies Plus, none of these cases are confirmed to be a result of its own pig ears.

“We are working with the FDA as they continue their investigation as to what caused the reported Salmonella related illnesses.

But, testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development revealed that ageing bulk pig ear product in one of Pet Supplies Plus’ stores tested positive for Salmonella. Consequently, the company says it has pulled bulk pig ear product from the shelves at all of its stores. It has also stopped shipping bulk pig ears from its Distribution Center.

Pets Supplies Plus has stated it is now working with the FDA in an effort to understand what caused the Salmonella related illness.

Consumers who have purchased bulk pig ears should discontinue use of the product and discard it.
