Eight types of Asian fish cake products have been recalled in the United States after un-disclosed allergens were found in them.
The US Food and Drug Administration has announced that Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc., Santa Fe Springs, CA is issuing a voluntary recall for eight types of Shirakiku brand imported fish cake products due to possible contamination with the following allergens: milk, egg and crustacean shellfish. Individuals with a sensitivity to these food ingredients run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction should they consume these products.
The fish cake products, which were imported from Japan, were distributed to retail stores right across the United States with no reference to the possible inclusion of the key allergens on the packaging.
The recall was instigated following testing conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which discovered the presence of the listed allergens that were not listed on the product labels. The manufacturer in Kagoshima, Japan has been made aware of the issue and is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the issue so that corrections can be implemented.
To ensure consumer safety, all distribution of the affected products has ceased and retailers have been notified to enable removal from shelves. No illnesses have been reported to date.
