Swiss chocolate and cocoa products company Barry Callebaut has broken ground at the site of its new chocolate and compound manufacturing facility in Baramati, India.
The facility will include modern assembly lines that manufacture chocolate and compounds in different formats for international food manufacturers. They will also provide for local confectioneries, as well as semi-industrial bakers and patisseries.
The factory and warehouse is the company’s biggest investment in India.
Covering 20,000m², the facility is scheduled to be operational by mid-2020 and will have an annual production capacity of more than 30,000t.
It is expected to create around 120 jobs, primarily in engineering and production.
The factory will also feature a research and development (R&D) lab. Together with its Chocolate Academy Center in Mumbai, Barry Callebaut plans to work with customers to co-create innovative chocolate for local consumers.
The expansion of the company’s footprint in India is tied to the country’s rapidly developing demand for high-quality chocolate and will serve to meet the growing needs of Barry Callebaut’s customers. The company established its presence in India by serving food manufacturers and setting up a nationwide distribution network.
Recently, Barry Callebaut introduced Ruby chocolate, the fourth type after dark, milk and white chocolate, as well as Van Houten Professional chocolate, in partnership with local manufacturers.
The company already has nine chocolate and cocoa factories in China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
The Zurich-based Barry Callebaut Group operates around 60 production facilities worldwide.
Over the last 12 months, Barry Callebaut expanded its sales operations in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It already has sales offices in India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Barry Callebaut’s second chocolate factory in Indonesia is under construction in Rancaekek.
