US-based Home Market Foods is recalling approximately 53,217lb of frozen ready-to-eat (RTE) beef and pork meatballs over misbranding and undeclared allergens.
According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the RTE beef and pork products contain milk and wheat that are not declared on the product label.
The frozen RTE and pork meatball items that are subject to recall include 48oz plastic bag packages of ‘Cooked Perfect Brand Homestyle Meatballs All Natural’ and bear establishment number ‘EST 2727’ inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Home Market Foods shipped these items to various retail outlets located in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
The problem was identified after the company received a consumer complaint reporting that the product was incorrectly labelled.
According to the agency, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products. Concerned consumers have been urged to contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS is concerned that some products may be in restaurant freezers and has advised restaurants not to serve them.
Consumers were urged not to consume the products and to either throw them away or return to the place of purchase.
The recall has been classified as Class 1, which represents a health hazard situation wher there are chances of serious, adverse health consequences or even death as a result of the consumption of the products.
Last December, CTI Foods recalled nearly 29,028lb of frozen, ready-to-eat (RTE) pork and poultry sausage products, as they may have been contaminated with pieces of metal.
