Eskimo Pie will become the latest major food brand to change its name due to concerns about racial insensitivity.
Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, the unit of Froneri that owns Eskimo Pie, announced last week that it will change the 99-year-old name of the chocolate-covered ice cream bar to “Edy’s Pie,” after Joseph Edy, one of Dreyer’s founders. Edy’s is already the name of a line of ice cream from Dreyer’s.
The company had announced in June that it intended to change the name. No timeline was given for the transition to Edy’s Pie.
"We are committed to being a part of the solution on racial equality, and recognize the term [Eskimo] is derogatory," Elizabell Marquez, Dreyers head of marketing, told CBS News.
