A European regulatory agency has approved the use of insects as food, clearing the way toward ultimate acceptance – at least, from a regulatory standpoint.
The European Food Safety Authority announced Jan. 13 that beetle larvae are safe to consume when prepared under proper conditions. Alternatives include consuming them whole or grinding them into a protein-rich flour.
Before such products can be sold in Europe, however, the decision would have to be ratified by the European unio, with approvals for marketing and labeling.
Insect-based protein is a major category of alternative proteins. Insects are widely consumed in some parts of Asia and Latin America, but it’s questionable how European consumers will accept the concept.
