Target Corp. has agreed to stop selling a leading brand of coconut milk over allegations that captive monkeys are used to harvest the coconuts it’s made from.

Theppadungporn Coconut Co., a Thailand-based processor of coconut products, has been the subject of a campaign from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to pressure retailers and others into dropping its products. PETA claims that the company uses coconuts harvested by trained monkeys that are held under abusive conditions.

Target agreed to stop selling Chaokoh brand coconut milk, marketed by Theppadungporn, after telling CNN that it could not get satisfactory answers from the company to PETAs allegations. Target is the second major retailer to do so, after Costco discontinued the product in October.

Theppadungporn denies PETA’s charges, claiming to the media that it has conducted third-party audits of the farms wher it sources coconuts, with no evidence of monkey labor being found.
