Food Standards Scotland (FSS) has welcomed reports of an increase in healthy snacking on fresh fruit and the number of people preparing meals from scratch.
However, the BBC Good Food Nation survey suggests that one in six young people between the age of 16 to 20 are consuming unhealthy fast food at least twice a day, as well as being the age group most likely to skip breakfast.
The FFS board has been continuing the healthy eating message through its first eating campaign, encouraging people in Scotland to make changes to what theyre snacking on as part of a package of measures designed to improve Scotlands health and reduce the future projection of 40% obesity by 2030.
In January, the FSS board recommended a package of measures to Scottish ministers with proposals including fiscal measures and regulation around food and drink promotions, if the food industry cannot achieve effective change by voluntary means. Portion size reduction and tougher targets for reformulation of foods and drinks were also recommended.
