Layn Natural Ingredients, an innovator of natural botanical extract ingredients and solutions, has expanded its Plantae by Layn portfolio incorporating more botanicals with broader functionalities as consumers increasingly demand more clean label products.
The move will help support food and beverage manufacturers and the flavor and fragrance industry with clean label, science-backed, natural botanical extract ingredients. The launch comes in response to the growing consumer demand for low-sugar, low-sodium products that are preserved naturally and have extended shelf life.
Blooming botanicals
The Plantae by Layn line includes three natural botanical extract ingredients categories: Plantae Preservation, Plantae Sense and Plantae Health.
Plantae Preservation consists of polyphenol-rich, clean-label technological antioxidant ingredients designed to provide anti-microbial support, extend shelf life and preserve taste and color in a broad range of food and beverage applications.
The line comprises proprietary formulas, as well as “potent” single botanical extract solutions such as Rosemary extract, Green tea extract, Acerola extract and pomegranate extract.
“Consumers are increasingly reading product labels and demanding more clean label ingredients,” says Collette Kakuk, VP of global marketing at Layn Natural Ingredients.
Avoiding synthetic ingredients
Meanwhile, Plantae Sense includes flavor maskers for sugar and sodium reduction, using sweetness and umami enhancers based on polyphenol-rich botanical extracts that provide “unique taste and sensory effects” for the food, beverage, flavor and fragrance industries.
The line includes phloretin (apple extract), neohesperidin (bitter orange extract), hesperidin (citrus extract), magnolol and honokiol (magnolia bark extract), naringenin (pomelo extract), naringin (pomelo extract), naringin and naringin DC (pomelo extracts) and chlorogenic acids (green coffee bean extract).
“We have responded to this demand by innovating natural solutions that effectively replac synthetic options for preservation, extending shelf life and providing anti-microbial support,” explains Kakuk.
“Consumers are also demanding less sugar and sodium in the products they buy, which can greatly impact product flavor. Innovating and expanding our portfolio to provide more science-backed, plant-based solutions for preservation and shelf life – and taste, to include enhancers and maskers – is a natural step for us to provide greater value to the food and beverage manufacturers,” he continues.
Moreover, Plantae Health provides functional botanical ingredients based on natural tea extracts. The line includes instant tea extract powder, beverage premixes and single functional botanical extracts.
Businesses are increasingly working to provide holistic experiences with food and beverages loaded with botanical ingredients to tap into increasing demand from consumers seeking flavorful health and mental well-being options.
In recent flavor and fragrance news, Insempra launched its first functional ingredient, a biotechnologically produced, 100% natural alpha-Ionone flavor and fragrance ingredient for food and beauty market applications.
