The US company has signed an agreement with Polish CIECH group, a supplier of evaporated salt products, to gain direct access to the ingredient and to be able to provide a full range of specialty and evaporated food salt solutions to European food manufacturers.
“By teaming up with CIECH, one of Europe’s leading salt suppliers, we can bring our expertise to our European customer base. Together we can provide access to Cargill’s global network of ingredient, application and sensory specialists, as well as a full portfolio of specialty and evaporated food salt solutions,” Sonya Roberts, president of Cargill’s salt business, tells FoodIngredientsFirst.
“We’ve been in the salt business in North America for more than 60 years, a legacy that gives us ample experience of providing technical expertise to customers looking to formulate foods with this foundational ingredient,” she continues.
The agreement complements Cargill’s existing food ingredients portfolio in Europe, which spans starches, sweeteners, texturizers, plant proteins, edible oils, cocoa and chocolate.
“This is an important stage in the development of our salt business as we are leveraging the extensive experience of Cargill to bring cutting-edge evaporated salt to the European market,” adds Philipp Kley, CIECH Group’s director of the salt business unit.
Salt synergies
CIECH Group has a production facility in Stassfurt, Germany, and one in Janikowo, Poland, making it one of Europe’s biggest producers of evaporated salt, according to the business.
Cargill currently provides salt and sodium solutions in North America and the Caribbean.
“Our research and development, sensory and ingredient experts offer solutions that range from specialty salts to potassium chloride blends and unique sodium reduction functional systems that mitigate flavor challenges,” concludes Roberts.
