In a bid to encourage consumers to opt for reusable cutlery, discount supermarket Aldi has removed all of its single use cutlery from its Food To Go Range.

Aldi has claimed that this move will result in a reduction of 10.5 million wooden forks in its salad and pasta bowls, equating to a total of 28 tonnes of waste saved.

Now, customers are being encourage to opt for reusable cutlery as a “permanent replacement”, with Aldi setting its sights on reducing its environmental impact.

Commenting on the decision, Luke Emery, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: “At Aldi, we are constantly reviewing ways to become more environmentally friendly, and this is another positive change to help us make a difference

“This will result in a significant reduction in single use materials and help customers to make more environmentally friendly choices,” continued Emery.

The discount supermarket also recently made the switch to colourless milk caps across all 990 of its UK store. It has said that this move was made to “further improve the recyclability of the bottles”. Aldi also noted that the roll out will mean “a further 200 tonnes of High-Density Polythene (rHDPE) in the bottle tops can be reused to create new milk bottles”.
