Beyond The Headlines: 3D printed salmon hits supermarket shelves, Kemin highlights food safety solut

Austrian food-tech start-up Revo Foods announced it will launch a 3D-printed vegan salmon filet in Rewe supermarket. The mycoprotein-based filet becomes the world’s first 3D printed food available in supermarkets, hailed as an important milestone for 3D food printing technology. This move into retail means the technology is now ready to scale to industrial volumes and many more 3D-printed foods can be expected in the near future.

Kemin Industries has highlighted its food safety solutions for hot dog applications. The BactoCEASE line of food safety ingredients offers protection from the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and extends the product shelf life for hot dogs. According to the company, Proteus functional proteins provide manufacturers with a clean label yield and quality enhancement solution.

The seleced companies stand out for having developed innovative solutions in alternative proteins, plant-based ingredients and more sustainable food formulations to mitigate food waste.

CSM Ingredients has celebrated the 100th anniversary of its production facility in Crema, Italy, producing margarine, vegetable creams and frozen bakery products. A new production line for margarine was also inaugurated, bringing the site’s production capacity to over 70,000 tons per year.

Suanfarma USA expands its strategy to develop and market sustainable botanical ingredients for the US market. The company has attained USDA Organic and Fair for Life certifications at its New Jersey site and for the new facility in Utah to serve the high demand from customers on the West Coast. 

Roquette has appointed Barentz International, a key global distributor of life science ingredients, as the sole distributor for their core food ingredients products in the North Latin American region. The extension of the strategic distribution partnership between Roquette and Barentz is effective as of January 1, 2024, and covers distribution in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.

Mark Foods and Arista Industries’ Seafood Division, two specialists in premium, frozen, sustainably sourced seafood, announced that they have agreed to combine and move forward as Mark Foods. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Tanmiah Food Company announced the signing of the shareholder agreement between its fully owned subsidiary, Desert Hills Veterinary Services Company Limited (DHV) MHP SE, the leading international food & agrotech group. This partnership is set to significantly boost food security and self-sufficiency in poultry products in Saudi Arabia.

Bacardi Limited has completed a transaction that makes the family-owned company the sole owner of Illegal Mezcal, a craft mezcal leading super premium. The transaction follows a successful relationship in which Bacardi has partnered with Illegal since 2015.

Mars has released “The Mars Net Zero Roadmap,” an action plan to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions across its full value chain by 2050. The Mars Roadmap includes a new target reviewed by the Science based Targets Initiative to cut emissions by 50% by 2030, from a 2015 baseline, with a pathway to Net Zero by 2050.

MMP-50 is one of seven clinically researched ingredients in the company’s portfolio and it plans to pursue more of the certification.

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Legume Systems Research, led by Michigan State University, has received a five-year funding extension, extending the program into new geographic regions. The program currently works in West and Southern Africa and will expand into the Great Lakes/East Africa and Central America/Caribbean regions. Cowpea and common beans are the Legume Systems Innovation Lab focus crops. Legumes are a nutrient-dense staple crop that has multifunctional roles in smallholder farm systems in developing countries, including food and nutrition security, generating income, providing livestock feed and fodder, contributing to the sustainability of soil systems through their nitrogen-fixing capabilities, and aiding to mitigate the impacts of climate change as low greenhouse gas emitting crops.
