Amid the cost-of-living crisis, consumer research company Which? Has carried out a study into the cheapest supermarkets in the UK.
Each month, Which? analyses the prices of thousands of products across eight major UK supermarkets. These include Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose.
For the month of April, Aldi came out on top, with Which? finding it charges £112.90 on average for the studied shopping list of 67 popular groceries.
Sharing Aldi’s stance on the study results, Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “We are as committed as ever to maintaining our position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket, while still offering outstanding quality products to our customers.
“Last month we announced that we’d invested £125m in price cuts so far in 2024, further demonstrating that we’ll continue to do whatever it takes to keep grocery prices as low as possible for the millions of customers that shop with us.”
Coming second to Aldi was discount retailer Lidl, coming out at £115.23 for the average shopping basket, just £2.33 more than the front runner.
Meanwhile when looking at the most expensive supermarket of the eight studied, Which? found that a basket containing 67 popular groceries from Waitrose amounted to £144.13.
However, the consumer researcher also took a deep dive into the price of a longer list of groceries. In this study, Which? considered 181 groceries, including the original 67 products.
Although Which? did not include Aldi and Lidl in the longer list price comparison study due to discount retailers “stocking fewer items”, it found that Asda was the cheapest supermarket for the larger shopping list, with the 181 groceries totalling £461.67.
Again, looking at the most expensive supermarket for the extended list, Waitrose remained the most expensive supermarket, with the longer list of items amounting to 514.98.
