A recent study conducted by a research team from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has identified the promising health benefits of a cocoa-flavoured, soy-based powder drink mix (PDM) enriched with hydrolysates from edible bird’s nests (EBNH).

Published in the Journal of Food Quality and Safety, the study investigates how EBNH, known for its bioactive properties, enhances the functional drink’s health-promoting effects. According to the study’s findings, the functional beverage showed potential in managing high blood pressure and inflammation and improving glycaemic control — all while prolonging satiety.

Dr. Zalifah Mohd Kasim, lead researcher and senior lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, described the innovation as a step forward in functional food development.

Kasim said, “The incorporation of EBNH into powdered drink mixes offers a novel way to enhance everyday nutrition with bioactive benefits. This fortified drink mix could serve as an effective dietary option for individuals managing hypertension and diabetes, or anyone looking for sustained energy and satiety. Our findings support the increasing interest in functional foods that address hunger while promoting better health outcomes.”

Uncovering its unique properties

The study explored the formulation’s unique properties. Enriched with three percent EBNH, the drink was shown to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a mechanism often targeted by antihypertensive drugs. By reducing compounds that raise blood pressure, the drink may provide a natural solution for hypertension management.

The product also demonstrated a low glycaemic index, stabilising post-meal blood sugar levels. In human trials, participants reported feeling full for up to 2.5 hours after consumption, attributed to the drink’s high protein and fibre content. This makes the beverage particularly appealing for diabetes care and weight management, addressing the growing demand for foods that combine convenience with therapeutic benefits.

Moreover, the drink’s antioxidant properties, derived from EBNH, stabilised red blood cells and reduced inflammation, offering additional support for those managing chronic conditions. Its low-calorie formulation further enhances its appeal as a functional food for health-conscious consumers or those with specific dietary restrictions.

As plant based and functional drinks continue to gain popularity, the study reinforces the importance of innovation in this sector and the role of edible bird’s nest hydrolysates as a valuable ingredient in creating health-promoting products.
