Mars Canada has officially opened its expanded facility in Newmarket, Ontario, which will be involved in the manufacture and packaging of the Maltesers chocolate brand.

The company is reported to have invested C$70m ($51.9m) in the 60,000ft² expansion facility, which is expected to create full-time employment opportunities for nearly 30 people in the region.

The expansion would also enhance the companys manufacturing capacity in the province to serve the growing North American market.

Maltesers produced at the Newmarket facility will be sold across Canada and the US, wher the product is being launched for the first time.

The expansion adds to Mars Canadas already significant presence in Ontario.

Wrigley Canada general manager Jeremy Daveau said: "This expansion builds on Mars rich history in Canada and comes at an exciting time for our overall investment and growth in Canada.

"Our Newmarket facility is the ideal home for Maltesers, with access to a highly skilled workforce, close proximity to the US for export and potential for expansion."

The company claims that its sustainable and modern facility would feature advanced manufacturing and packaging technologies, as well as employ up to 150 associates.
