Most of Europe is familiar with the products grown in the area of Almeria, which is why companies like Ecoinver intend to continue opening new markets with the goal of becoming more competitive. So far, they have already started their commercial activity in Russia and Ukraine, although they must adapt their production a little more to the specific demands of these countries. "For us there is no problem, we are very flexible. We cultivate whatever they ask from us," affirms Tatiana Tkach, head of exports at the company Ecoinver.
For now, countries like Germany, which receives 25% of the production exported; and Switzerland and France, each receiving 17%, are its strongest markets; "however, we know that in order to keep growing, we need to continue promoting ourselves in other countries, so for us, the UK would be the next step," adds Tkach. The company exports between 70 and 75% of its total production, which amounts to about 14,000 tonnes per year.
There are also countries in the European unio with which they need to assess their chances. The Netherlands, which grows similar tomatoes, has better access to certain countries of northern Europe, so it is a great competitor. On the other hand, Poland, because of its proximity to Russia, is also a country that needs to be taken into account when exporting their products.
