Starbucks is breaking ground today on a $50 million expansion for its 341,000-square-foot Carson Valley roasting plant and distribution center in Minden.
The project, set to be complete in summer 2018, will add 700,000 square feet to the facility’s distribution portion, allowing Starbucks to increase capacity and streamline regional sourcing, the company said.
Additionally, the expansion will bring 100 new jobs to the location, bringing the distribution workforce to nearly 350.
“We serve all of California, Nevada and Utah, as well as parts of Arizona and Asia Pacific,” said Todd McCullough, director of distribution at the facility. “We do everything here from coffee to syrups to behind-the-bar supplies.”
Starbucks original roasting facility in the area opened in 2003 as a 360,000-square-foot plant before expanding in 2005. It is located on a 100-acre site that Starbucks purchased for $4.6 million. Construction of the original facility cost about $40 million.
The Carson Valley facility is also the site of the first Starbucks Inclusion Academy, a six-week training program launched in 2014 that helps those with disabilities gain work experience in manufacturing, warehousing and distribution.
