Applegate, a subsidiary of Hormel Foods Corp., has achieved Non GMO Project verification for its natural and organic beef hot dogs.
“We want to provide consumers nationwide with a worry-free hot dog option that is made with 100% grass-fed beef that’s humanely raised without antibiotics, and now with no G.M.O.s from animal feed to final ingredients,” said Steve Lykken, president of Applegate. “Last July, we launched our first two Non-GMO Project verified products — Applegate Organics Chicken Nuggets and Applegate Organics Gluten-free Chicken Nuggets — and made a commitment to third-party verify all our products are made without G.M.O.s throughout the entire supply chain.”
Additionally, the company said its Applegate Organics Turkey Burgers have gained verification from the Non GMO Project.
Applegate’s announcement follows similar statements from other major C.P.G. companies committing to clean up their hot dogs. In May, Kraft Heinz’s Oscar Mayer brand underwent a clean label conversion. The entire line now has no added nitrates or nitrites, no artificial preservatives in the meat and no byproducts in any of the hot dogs. In April, Tyson Foods Inc. removed all added nitrites and nitrates from its Ball Park brand beef hot dogs.
