Shirley’s cookie Company Inc. of Claysburg, PA, is recalling over 600 units of 16-ounce packages of “Chocolate Whoopie Pie” because they may contain peanuts, which were not declared on the label, according to a recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.
People who have an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
The recalled “Chocolate Whoopie Pie” products were packaged in 16-ounce, clear plastic packages, and are marked with a wrap around “Weis” Label with a UPC of 4149710692.
According to the recall notice, the recalled products were distributed to the following Weis Markets Headquarters on September 14, 2018:

According to the FDA, the affected 55 cases (660 units) of “Chocolate Whoopie Pie” has a batch code of 227256 and a “freezer Sell-By date” of “9/1/19.”
“The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the peanut-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts,” and, “Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the Chocolate Whoopie Pie as of Thursday, according to the recall.
The FDA said that production of the product has been suspended until the FDA and the company is certain that the problem has been corrected.
Consumers who have purchased 16-ounce packages of “Chocolate Whoopie Pie” are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
