Kellogg’s has expanded its Special K Protein line with the addition of Protein Honey Almond Ancient Grains cereal in the US.
The brand claims that its new cereal contains 15g of protein per serving, which increases to 21g when served with ¾ of a cup of skimmed milk.
The product features flakes made from a mix of whole grains, including the ancient grains sorghum and black rice alongside wheat and rice. The cereal also contains honey and crunchy almonds.
Kellogg’s Special K marketing director Christie Crouch said: “When Special K hit shelves in the 1950s, it was the first cereal to feature key vitamins and nutrients, including protein.
“Today, we continue to look for ways to innovate that stay true to that heritage and do more with both nutrition and taste. That’s why our new Protein cereal recipes include a nutrient bundle designed to help you get more from your protein.”
Additionally, the product is claimed to offer magnesium, calcium and vitamin D.
In March 2018, Kellogg’s announced its plans to increase the level of vitamin D in its breakfast cereals to counteract chronically low levels in the UK.
Kellogg’s had then stated that its cereals would contain 50% of the government’s recommended reference daily intake (RDI) of 5g.
In 2011, it became the first breakfast cereal company to meet 25% of the recommended RDI for vitamin D.
