US-based JBS Plainwell has issued a recall of 43,292lb of ground beef products as they may have been contaminated with extraneous materials, especially pieces of hard plastic, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

       The recall includes 1lb ground beef loaves featuring 80% lean and 20% fat, 85% lean 15% fat, and 90% lean 10% fat.

       The recall also covers 1lb plastic wrapped ground beef loaves carrying the tag of ‘Lean Ground Beef’, ‘Certified Ground Chuck’, ‘Certified Ground Sirloin’, ‘Certified Ground Round’, ‘Fresh! Black Angus Ground Chuck’, and ‘Ground Beef’.

       “FSIS was notified about the issue on 5 April 2019 by the company after receiving two complaints of green hard plastic found in the ground beef products.”

       JBS Plainwell’s ground beef loaf products were produced on 20 March 2019 and bear the establishment number EST 562M inside the USDA mark of inspection or printed on the bottom of the label.

       The items were shipped to retail locations in Michigan and Wisconsin.

       FSIS was notified about the issue on 5 April 2019 by the company after receiving two complaints of green hard plastic found in the ground beef products.

       There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.

       FSIS said that anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

       Consumers have been urged not to consume the products and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

       The recall has been categorised as Class II, which indicates that the use of the product could cause adverse health consequences.

       Last month, Washington Beef recalled 30,260lb of ground beef chub products over possible contamination with extraneous materials.
