US-based company Pita Pal Foods, LP of Houston, Texas has issued a recall of numerous hummus products and dips following detection of Listeria monocytogenes in their factory.
Pita Pal Foods, LP of Houston, TX has issued a voluntary recall of certain hummus products made between 30 May 2019 and 25 June 2019, due to concerns over the Listeria monocytogenes pathogen, which was identified at the company’s manufacturing facility – although not in finished product – during the course of a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Furthermore, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No illnesses have been reported to date for these products and the FDA states that the company is issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution.
The hummus products, which include such brands as Bucee’s, Fresh Thyme and Harris Teeter, have been distributed throughout the entire United States and to the United Arab Emirates. Consumers who have purchased products listed in this document with the stated use-by dates are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
