Washington would become the first state in the nation to prevent water from being extracted for bottling if pending legislation gets passed.
A bill passed by the state senate would forbid new permits for bottled water taken from natural sources. The bill was proposed after a Japanese-owned bottling company, Crystal Geyser Roxane, began drilling for water on a site about 100 miles south of Seattle.
Proponents of the legislation say that bottled water depletes groundwater tables and other fresh water sources and adds to pollution with plastic bottles. Opponents say it’s unfair to single out the bottled water industry and that the bad effects of drilling and bottling are exaggerated.
The bill passed the state senate on a largely party-line vote. Gov. Jay Inslee has not yet said whether he intends to sign it.
