The chairman of Tyson Foods took out full-page newspaper advertisements warning that “the food supply chain is breaking” unless meat processing plants are soon allowed back into production.

John Tyson signed his name to ads published April 26 in the New York Times, Washington Post and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette claiming that “millions of pounds of meat” will not reach America’s stores “until we are able to reopen our facilities that are currently closed.” The ads said that farmers will have to destroy “millions of animals” that they won’t be able to sell.

Tyson Foods has been forced to close two pork plants due to the coronavirus outbreak, reducing the total U.S. pork slaughterhouse capacity by 19%.

CNN quoted workers at a closed Tyson plant in Waterloo, Iowa, as complaining that the company wasn’t doing enough to protect them. Tyson Foods responded that it is conducting extra sanitation, issuing workers face masks and taking their temperature, and paying them bonuses.
