The coronavirus situation is creating a beer crisis in Mexico, with breweries shut down and thirsty consumers wandering the streets looking for a cold one.
Mexican breweries, unlike American ones, were declared non-essential businesses by the Mexican government last month. The result has been a shortage of beer that has dried up supplies in stores, with Oxxo, Mexico’s largest chain of convenience stores, saying in late April that it was down to 10 days’ supply.
#LaÚltimaChela (the last beer) has become a hashtag on social media. Authorities are getting nervous about consumers congregating in lines instantly when word gets out that a store has a beer supply, ignoring social distancing measures.
The situation has also affected supplies for Mexican beer exports, including popular brands like Dos Equis and Modelo. Corona beer is still being brewed in the U.S. by Constellation Brands, under license from Modelo.
