Trump Loosens Rules for Fish Farms

The Trump administration has proposed loosening the rules that govern aquaculture as a way to shore up the U.S. protein supply.

An executive order signed May 7 by President Trump takes various measure to ease the path toward farm-raised fish, including: easing the path toward getting permits; beefing up measures against illegal fishing; and encouraging aquaculture development generally.

Trump’s executive order names the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration as the lead government agency for considering aquatic farm applications, a change long sought by the industry. It directs the Secretary of Commerce to solicit recommendations from Regional Fishery Management Councils on how to “reduce burdens on domestic fishing and to increase production within sustainable fisheries.” It also directs federal agencies to find, each year, “at least two geographic areas containing locations suitable for commercial aquaculture.”

In addition, the administration is announcing a $300 million grant to help fishing and other related businesses that have been hurt by the pandemic.
