Unilever is once again considering consolidating its headquarters, this time in London.
The consumer goods giant, formed in 1929 by the merger of an English soap company with a Dutch margarine company, splits its headquarters between London and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Unilever is seeking to make London its single headquarters to make acquisitions and other major management decisions less cumbersome, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Unilever had announced plans in 2017 to move its permanent headquarters to Rotterdam. That plan foundered because many shareholders objected to its being delisted from the FTSE 100, the index of most highly capitalized UK companies on the London Stock Exchange. There were also objections that leaving London during Brexit would reflect badly on the company.
The shift to London will require shareholder approval. The company is hoping to get the deal done by the end of this year.
