Walmart is preparing for Thanksgiving by making sure it can cater to the smaller groups around the dinner table this year.
Thanksgiving and other holiday celebrations are expected to be curtailed in number due to the pandemic. According to a survey from Deloitte, 38% of consumers say they plan to spend less on the holidays this year. Travel and socializing away from home is expected to decline 34% from last year.
As a result, Walmart is increasing its assortment of turkey breasts, boneless and bone-in, by 20% to 30%, according to a blog post by Jacqui Lyons, Walmart’s divisional merchandise manager for seafood and seasonal meat. Walmart also will be lowering prices for turkey starting Nov. 2, which is earlier than normal.
Lyons noted that, this past Easter, consumers shopped for their ham and other holiday meal components early, and that after Easter, ham sales were up through summer as consumers cooked more at home. “With Walmart customers planning smaller gatherings and prioritizing convenience, ham will be in the spotlight and we’ve increased our inventory accordingly,” she wrote.
