A pet food poisoning outbreak that has killed 28 dogs has been traced to a processor in Evansville, Ind.
Midwestern Pet Foods is recalling various dry pet food products under the Sportmix label, including Energy Plus, Premium High Energy and Original Cat (although no cats are known to have been affected).
The products are said to contain aflatoxin, a poison generated by mold that grows on corn and other grains. A combination of reports of pet illnesses and deaths, and internal testing at the company, led to a voluntary recall coordinated through the FDA.
