The death toll continues to mount in the Midwestern Pet Foods case, leading to an expanded recall and a class-action lawsuit.

The deaths of 110 dogs are attributed to aflatoxin from mold in dry pet food sold under the Sportmix brand, up from 70 in earlier reports. Midwestern Pet Foods has expanded its recall to encompass all pet food, dog or cat, containing corn that was processed at its facility in Chickasha, Okla.

Consumers who allege that their pets died as a result of eating the tainted product have filed a federal lawsuit against Midwestern Pet Foods that they are seeking to convert to a class action. As reported by Law360.com, one plaintiff alleged that not only did three of his pit bulls die from the tainted food, but that eight puppies recently borne by one of them died also.
