Kelloggs is taking strides toward its sustainability goals through a recent partnership with Enel Green Power North America. According to an announcement, by way of a 100 MW virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), Kellogg Company will purchase a 360 GWh portion of electricity annually delivered from the Azure Sky wind project. The 360 GWh is equal to 50% of the volume of electricity used across Kellogg’s North American manufacturing facilities.
The move is part of Kelloggs efforts to achieve more than 50% renewable energy and to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 65%
Enel, which is the parent company of Enel Green Power North America, recently started construction of Azure Sky wind + storage, its first large-scale hybrid project globally to integrate wind and battery storage at one site. Located in Throckmorton County, Texas, the 350 MW wind farm paired with approximately 137 MW of battery storage will be Enel’s third hybrid project in the US that integrates a renewable energy plant with utility-scale battery storage. The 79 wind turbines at the Azure Sky project are expected to generate more than 1,300 GWh each year, which will be delivered to the grid and will charge the battery located in the same facility.
Kelloggs is not the first major food company to partner with Enel. In September 2020, Mondelēz International worked with the firm to purchase solar power from the Roadrunner Solar Project in Upton, Texas.
