Amyris has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a partnership with Brazilian beef exporter Minerva Foods to develop molecules that will support the sustainable production and distribution of animal protein.
As agreed, Minerva will fund the development and be responsible for the commercialisation of the target molecules.
To be developed by Amyris, the molecules will include natural preservatives from fermentation to increase meat shelf-life at reduced carbon dioxide levels.
The two companies may also collaborate for the development of fermentation-based alternative to animal-based protein.
Amyris president and CEO John Melo said: “With our partnership with Minerva, we continue our growth through a tradition of collaborating with market leaders who have a deep understanding of their end-markets.
“Minerva is a leader in animal protein production that is committed to reducing carbon emissions in the entire animal protein production value chain through innovation of its industry.
“This partnership is expected to deliver several million dollars in collaboration revenue this year as well as contribute to our long-term product revenue growth. We are excited to expand our platform into the fermentation-based protein market with one of the world’s leading producers of meat.”
The two companies are expected to enter definitive agreements in the following weeks. The closing is expected in the second quarter of this year, subject to customary closing conditions.
Minerva CEO Fernando Galletti De Queiroz said: “We envision a world wher consumption of animal protein will continue and the demand for alternatives will grow.
“With Amyris’s clean fermentation technology, we expect to lead the disruption of the animal protein industry and reduce our industry’s carbon footprint.”
Founded in 1992, Minerva Foods is the largest exporter of beef in South America. It produces and sells natura (chilled) and frozen beef, processed protein products, live cattle, and sub-products.
