GNT has launched two Exberry Coloring Foods made from turmeric and spirulina, inspiring “a connection to the natural world.” The company says the move will open up new opportunities for clean label green hues in F&B applications.

Exberry Shade Jade Green delivers a bright, bluish-green shade, while Exberry Shade Lime Green provides a yellowish-green hue.

The products expand GNT’s range of green Coloring Foods, helping the company cater to the growing global demand for cost-effective green colors that support clean label declarations.

A bright history – and future
Speaking to FoodIngredientsFirst, Christina Niehoff, product manager at GNT, says the color green can be used in a vast array of food and beverage products.

“It’s a color that has a long history in traditional favorites such as fruit jellies and mint ice cream, but it can also be used to create innovative products with unusual flavors such as avocado yogurts or eucalyptus-flavored gummies.”

Green also has a powerful association with healthy fruit and vegetables as well as lush vegetation, regeneration and rebirth, notes Niehoff. “It’s a calming, relaxing shade that has huge appeal to consumers right now.”

“The challenges of recent times have left many consumers seeking out moments of escapism from the stresses and strains of daily life,” she underscores. “Green can help create that sense of serenity and a connection with the natural world, so it’s a shade that’s proving more popular than ever.”

Boasting natural ingredients
The use of spirulina and turmeric makes it possible for manufacturers to achieve vibrant greens in a wide range of applications while utilizing on-trend, natural ingredients.

“Spirulina and turmeric are approved for use in food colorings in most countries, and they’re well-known and well-liked by consumers all over the world,” adds Niehoff.

They’re non-GMO, halal, kosher and vegan-friendly, too, ensuring maximum consumer acceptance, she details.

Liquid-based colors
Shade Jade Green and Shade Lime Green are both liquid-based and can be used in various applications.

They are ideal for confectionery such as fruit jellies and hard-panned products; dairy products including yogurt and ice cream; and decorative coatings for bakery, dairy and more.

They also have no impact on taste in the final application due to the physical, water-based methods used to create the colors.
According to the company, green Coloring Foods provide good overall performance and wonderfully vibrant shades while supporting completely clean and clear labels.

based on the principle of coloring food with food, Exberry products are made from edible, non-GMO fruit, vegetables and plants using physical processing methods and no chemical solvents.

As a result, they offer “a perfect solution for the modern market,” says GNT.

In January, GNT launched an oil-dispersible pink Coloring Food shade made from fruit and vegetables.

Meanwhile, the company flagged that the color red is poised to shake up the food and beverage industry in 2021, thanks to its ability to spark powerful emotions.

In line with its color forecast for 2021, GNT unveiled its beetroot-based Fiesta Pink micronized powder in October. The pink hue was pegged to transform superfoods and boost beverages.
