Walkers are set to trial a new multipack packaging for Snack A Jacks that reportedly use 86 percent less plastic on the outer packaging.

The new design will be rolled out in Tesco stores across the UK and is made from a tape-like strip which holds together five individual packets of Snack A Jacks. Flavours included in the packaging redesign include: Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream & Chive and BBQ.

Walkers has said that the new outer tape as well as the individual packets qualify as officially recyclable under the UK On-Pack Recycling Label Scheme (OPRL) and can be recycled at flexible packaging collection points in supermarkets across the UK.

The snack giant has invested over £2 million in new equipment to enhance reduced plastic packaging capabilities at the Walkers’ Skelmersdale site in Lancashire (wher Snack A Jacks are made).

This decision comes as part of PepsiCo Positive, Walkers parent company’s health and sustainability transformation plan.

PepsiCo Positive has a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2040. To do this, PepsiCo Europe has said that it has plans to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic in crisp and snack bags by 2030. This will apply to UK brands including Snack A Jacks, Walkers, Doritos, Quavers, Wotsits, and Pipers.
