The Service Employees International unio, the country’s second-largest unio that represents almost 2 million workers, is preparing for budget cuts over the next year under Donald Trump’s presidency.
With Republicans controlling Washington, the SEIU has planned a 30-percent cut from impending threats to the unio, such as minimized health-care spending, according to an international memo reviewed by Bloomberg Businessweek.
“Because the far right will control all three branches of the federal government, we will face serious threats to the ability of working people to join together in unios,” Mary Kay Henry, president of SEIU, wrote in an internal memo dated Dec. 14.
“These threats require us to make tough decisions that allow us to resist these attacks and to fight forward despite dramatically reduced resources.”
Although the unio’s budget has been reduced, its Fight for $15 campaign is still advocating for livable wages. California and New York already passed $15 minimum wages this year.
