The 6-year-old said she was talking to “Alexa” when she accidentally ordered a very pricey dollhouse and the cookies
Many lucky tech junkies unwrapped an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot under the tree during the holiday season. But even though this AI servant seems like it can do just about anything, perhaps it does too much?
Six-year-old Brooke Neitzel, of Dallas, was asking her mom’s Amazon Echo Dot about a dollhouse and cookies. “Alexa,” the artificially intelligent personal assistant, took Brooke’s queries as commands and placed an order for four pounds of cookies and a $170 dollhouse.
Her mom, Megan, got the shock of her life when the bill and shipments came in, but she said she was using the funny accident as a “teaching moment.” The family will be donating the dollhouse to charity, but they (understandably) kept the cookies to enjoy themselves, Megan told Fox News.
Meanwhile, Megan she has taught her daughter to be more careful when in earshot of Alexa’s apparently superb listening skills. Megan has also activated the child lock on her Echo Dot so that a password is required for all future purchases, and she suggests all parents do the same.
