The salad contains gluten, a known allergen, but the product was mislabelled as gluten-free.

The company explained that certain people have an allergy or severe sensitivity to specific types of allergens such as gluten, which could pose serious, life-threatening allergic reactions if consumed.

The Cumberland Farms range of salads is available in various flavours but the company has recalled only the chicken Caesar as its ingredients include croutons, which contain gluten.

The company has already directed its retail locations to remove this product from sale. It is also recalling the salad from its Northeast and New York-based stores.

Related illnesses caused due to the consumption of this product have not yet been reported.

Cumberland Farm has also urged customers who have bought the affected product to discard it immediately or return it to the nearest retail location for a full refund.

Established in 1939, Cumberland Farms operates nearly 600 stores spread across eight US states.
