The recall of AKI brand Chum Salmon Caviar in Canada for possible Clostridium botulinum contamination has been updated. The products were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and may have been sold nationwide. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s investigation of the problem. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The recalled products are AKI Chum Salmon Caviar in two sizes. The 100 gram size has the UPC number 6 28451 22604 8 and product code 2018/08/30, and the 50 gram size has the UPC number 6 28451 22603 1 and the product code 2018/08/30.
The recall was triggered by CFIA inspection activities. Government officials are conducting a food safety investigation, and may recall more products or issue more information about the recall.
The products are being recalled because they may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Those bacteria can produce a toxin that is very dangerous. A tiny amount can paralyze an adult person, or cause death. This bacteria and toxin do not change the look, smell, taste, or texture of products that harbor it.
Do not eat this product if you have purchased it. Throw it away in a sealed or double wrapped package, then put that package into a secure garbage can. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling this product.
Symptoms of botulism poisoning in adults can include facial paralysis or loss of expression, unreactive or fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking or including slurred speech, and a change in sound of voice, including hoarseness. Symptoms in children may be different and may include difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, generalized weakness and paralysis. In all cases, botulism does not cause a fever.
If anyone is experiencing any of these symptoms, they should be taken to a doctor immediately. There is an antidote for this toxin, but it should be given as soon as possible.
