In April and May, asparagus producers from the state of Aguascalientes planted around 80 hectares of this crop in the municipalities of Rincon de Romos, Tepezala, Pabellon de Arteaga, and Asientos; a job that they will continue between June and September, stated the president of the Asparagus Product System, Carlos de la Cruz Padilla.

    He also said that this crop had adapted very well to the states soil and climate conditions, and that the harvest of the 70 established hectares would start in July.

    He also stated that this was an innovative crop, which has a lower consumption of water than other traditional crops, and that its marketing was guaranteed through contract farming.

    Carlos de la Cruz said that these new hectares planted with asparagus were mostly from the same producers who had started growing this crop in one or two hectares and are now increasing the area. In addition to some farmers who, after seeing the results obtained, are interested in working this product.

    The average yield of this crop has stood at four to six tons per hectare, with an approximate value of two dollars per kilo. The commercialization of the product is assured through contract farming, and all of the production is destined for export to the United States.
