Shandong has long been an important province in Chinas vegetable production. Shouguang is the largest vegetable production, collection, and distribution area in China. It is in this city that the National Vegetable Quality Control Center was established on July 12th, 2018.

Song Jianchao, member of the leading party committee on agriculture and countryside, stated that there are also plans to establish additional centers for research and development and integration of the national vegetable industry, product safety evaluation and early warning, brand cultivation and product certification, as well as information distribution and technological services.
