Representatives of the National Phytosanitary Authority of Romania acknowledge that one-third of the vegetables and fruit produced in the country are treated with chemicals.

Pesticides are accepted in the European unio and their threat is not related to their use in itself, but to the chaotic way in which the substances are administered.

1% of the domestic vegetables eaten by Romanians contain pesticides above the maximum level allowed, which makes them harmful and dangerous to the health of consumers. The source of this data is the National Phytosanitary Authority, which also acknowledges that one third of the total volume of fruits and vegetables produced in Romania is treated with chemicals.

The situation is similar in the case of imports, as 3% of the samples taken by ANSVSA from the goods brought from abroad have exceeded the maximum allowed pesticide levels.

In total, 30% of all imported fruits and vegetables have pesticide residues, informs stirileprotv.ro.

Small producers admit to spraying their crops with dozens of substances, to only against pests, but also to accelerate crop growth.

Aurelia Surdu, head of service at the National Phytosanitary Authority, says that two weeks after the treatment, fruit and vegetables should not be harvested or marketed.

Although she claims that legislation in this area is clear, Aurelia Surdu cannot explain why the Romanian state does not carry out frequent checks.

Otherwise, we may ingest a long list of harmful substances every day, not just fungicides or insecticides, but also growth stimulants. The harmful effects do not appear immediately, but by accumulation.

Every year, Romania imports a million tonnes of vegetables and fruits. And the obligation to verify and ensure that the products cannot affect peoples health is the National Sanitary and Veterinary Authority.

The problem is the products from non-EU countries that enter the country only on the basis of the accompanying documents. They are checked by sampling, and the train drivers dont usually agree to unloading all of the goods for sampling.
