For those impatient people who find even self serve check-outs too time-consuming, Woolworths may have the answer. It’s trialling new tech that does away with check-outs altogether.
At its supermarket in Sydney’s Double Bay, the retailer is letting customers trial a new “scan and go” system. If a success, it could spell the end for all check-outs, as customers put items straight into their bags. It’s also a sign of the steadily diminishing role coins and notes are playing in the retail sector.
Woolworths said the App could potentially “transform the shopping experience”.
Several thousand shoppers already signed up to its loyalty program will be able to download a special app to their phones. The trial, which is only taking place at the one store, will mean customers can choose their products, scan the barcode through their phone and then directly dro the items into their bags.
When done, customers will do one final scan at a terminal near the exit. The app will tot up the total and automatically subtract the amount from a linked card. There will be no need to go through a checkout at all.
According to news.com.au, the app has been developed by the company’s in-house technological innovation division, dubbed WooliesX.
