A tourist is warning other holidaymakers to take care when buying fruit in Pakistan after she spotted a street vendor spray painting green grapes red. Layla Khan from Birmingham, was visiting family in Afzalpur, Pakistan, when her aunt became sick after eating some grapes.
When Khan and her cousin went to investigate the street market wher they had been bought from, she was shocked to see a vendor crouched behind a stall using a can of Win spray paint to dye the fruit.
Footage taken by them shows the middle-aged man spin his head round as he notices the camera and smirks – before placing the grapes on the ground in a pile with other painted fruit.
The man doesn’t appear to be phased when he is questioned in the video. He simply continues spray painting and dying the fruit, presumably to make it appear more natural and boost sales.
Layla said she reported the incident to the local police force who have been approached for comment. It’s not the first time street vendors have been caught for altering food.
According to metro.co.uk, food safety officers in India have been warning people to take care when buying milk, oil, spices as well as fruit and vegetables, for years as many resort to altering them in a bid to boost sales. Dyes and chemicals are often used by farmers to disguise unripe or rotting fruits, as well as silicone or wax to make it appear more fresh.
