Bazzinil LLC is recalling 4,000 pounds of pistachios after internal testing turned up positive results for Salmonella. The Allentown, PA, company has stopped production and distribution of several specific products to investigate the source of the bacteria.
Company officials told federal investigators that the implicated nuts had come from a third-party supplier, according to the BazziniI LLC recall notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration Oct. 10.
“The recall was initiated as the result of a routine sampling program by the company which revealed that the finished product may contain the bacteria,” according to the notice. “Consumers who have purchased any of the listed Pistachios are urged to return (them) to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
BazziniI LLC distributed the affected product through retail sales, direct delivery, and mail order in New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Washington D.C. and Virginia. No illnesses have been confirmed in relation to the recalled pistachios, the company reported in the recall notice.

Anyone who has eaten any of the implicated pistachios and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctor about the possible exposure to the bacteria. Otherwise healthy adults often recover from the infections after mild symptoms.
However, in children, frail or elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems — such as cancer patients — Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
Symptoms can include fever, diarrhea that may be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
