25 Apr 2019 --- Functional ingredients manufacturer Beneo is now capable of producing organic inulin from chicory roots, in what the company claims is an industry first. As interest in organic products continues to grow, more customers are seeking out organic solutions. To date, no organic inulin from chicory has been available, however. With this latest development, Beneo will be able to offer inulin derived from chicory root fiber at a competitive premium price, when compared to organic inulin from other sources.

“With global market volume in the thousands of metric tons for organic inulin and considerable potential for further growth, we see untapped opportunities for this innovative ingredient to extend into the organic market,” Eric Neven, Commercial Managing Director of Beneo Functional Fibers comments. “We are excited to working in partnership with our customers to explore these and meet the growing demand for organic solutions.”

Beneo’s chicory root fiber, inulin, is marketed as a “natural, non-GMO, clean label and clinically proven” plant-based prebiotic fiber that is derived from chicory root via a gentle hot water extraction method. There already exists a wealth of research supporting the health benefits of Beneo’s Orafti Inulin covering digestive health, lowering blood glucose response and weight management – all of which also apply to organic inulin. This also includes Beneo’s exclusive EU health claim for its inulin in promoting digestive health.

Beneo has two production plants for chicory root fiber – one in Oreye, Belgium and one in Pemuco, Chile. Being located on two different hemispheres, the company benefits from two harvests per year, Neven notes. “This, in combination with our extensive planning system which takes into account various factors, means we are well prepared to meet increased demand,” he tells FoodIngredientsFirst.

As Beneo’s business is based on agronomic products, the company actively supports sustainable farming to encourage biodiversity and to reduce water pollution and soil erosion, Neven explains. “For chicory root fibers, this means that the soil from the chicory roots is largely removed from the crop to ensure it remains on the fields wher it is needed, which also maximizes transport efficiency. In summary, waste from the incoming crop is minimized and the raw material is completely utilized. We respect all strict requirements on crop development and field preparation related to an organic crop,” he says.

Despite growing consumer interest in digestive health and organic products, taste remains the most crucial factor, however. Being soluble and having a mildly sweet taste, Beneo’s Orafti Inulin is said to deliver an appealing mouthfeel, texture and taste, applicable for use in dairy, bakery, and cereal products, among others. This presents food manufacturers with the opportunity to help consumers keep their digestive systems healthy, naturally and with ease, without having to make any significant changes to their diet or sacrifice on taste or texture.
