US-based developer of plant-based products Impossible Foods has entered a co-manufacturing collaboration with global food provider OSI Group.
Starting next month, OSI will produce the ‘Impossible Burger’.
Impossible Foods Product and Operations senior vice-president Sheetal Shah said: “We conducted an exhaustive due diligence process to determine how to scale our manufacturing, both in the short term and over the next several years, and we were thoroughly impressed with OSI’s commitment to quality and responsiveness.
“OSI has already installed equipment to make the Impossible Burger, and we’ll start seeing new capacity every week.”
Under the new partnership, OSI will expand the production capacity at Impossible Foods’ plant in Oakland, California, for a short-term period. Thereafter, it will continue to expand production of the Impossible Burger throughout the year.
The additional capacity will help the company to meet the increasing demand for the plant-based product.
Over the last two months, the company has doubled its workforce and is planning to continue hiring new employees.
OSI North America senior executive vice-president Kevin Scott said: “We look forward to lending our expertise to Impossible Foods as it embarks on one of the most ambitious startups in the food industry.
“At the same time, Impossible Foods will help fulfil the OSI Group’s commitment to sustainable food production, one of the core prisms through which OSI management makes operational decisions.”
Impossible Foods also received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to launch its Impossible Burger in retail outlets across the US.
OSI procures, produces and distributes custom food solutions across the globe. The company operates more than 65 facilities in 17 countries.
