Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.
Established in 2011 by Brian Smith and Jackie Cuscuna, the New York-based Ample Hills has been producing a wide range of ice cream flavours and cakes.
The company plans to reopen its Red Hook factory in Brooklyn, New York, as well as nine ice cream scoop locations in the coming weeks as New York City begins to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ample Hills Creamery also plans to rehire its team members.
Schmitt chairman and chief executive officer Michael Zapata said: “The safety and well-being of our employees are of the utmost importance as we reopen retail locations in the greater Brooklyn and New York area.
“Their engagement with our loyal customers daily, the excellent flavours and stories built into every pint of ice cream, and the brand’s effortless nostalgia make up this special company.
