Pork Producers Slam Plant Analogues

The National Pork Producers Council is striking out at Impossible Foods following the rollout of some Impossible plant-based products designed to mimic pork.

Impossible Pork and Impossible Sausage debuted as samples handed out during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9. Burger King, which already sells the flagship Impossible Burger, will test Impossible Sausage patties in Croissan’wiches, Burger King’s breakfast sandwiches, at 139 Burger King outlets in five markets.

The National Pork Producers’ Council slammed the concept. “This is a brazen attempt to circumvent decades of food labeling law and centuries of precedence,” Dan Kovich, director of science and technology for the National Pork Producers Council, told Agdaily.com.

Meat producers in general have been agitating for laws restricting what meat analogue products can say on packaging. Several states have passed them, but a federal judge put an Arkansas law on hold, ruling that it likely violates the Constitution.
