Michigan has instituted testing for coronavirus exposure for many of its food processing and agricultural workers, following a recent spike in outbreaks.
The measure, an emergency decree from the state health department, will apply to migrant housing camps and all agricultural operations with 20 or more employees, as well as all meat, poultry and egg processing plants.
New residents in migrant camps must get tested within 48 hours of arrival and must be provided separate housing until passing a second test within 10 to 14 days.
A large influx of migrant agricultural workers comes to Michigan each summer to pick fruit and other crops. Latinos make up about 5% of the state’s population but 11% of all COVID-19 cases wher the victim’s ethnicity is identified.
